Pixie Lane on her latest single ‘TAKE ME TO THE RAVE’ & more
Hype Medium: Kia ora Pixie! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us! First of all, we’d love to hear how you first got into DJing and music production?
Pixie: Thank you so much for having me! I first got into DJing at the end of 2019. Music has always been a big part of my life and a safe place for me, so when I moved back to New Zealand after living in Whistler, Canada, I found myself feeling a little lost. I wanted to find something new to focus on, so I decided to take up DJing.
My best friend Kazi Flip taught me how to DJ and after my very first performance in January 2020, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. With all the lockdowns happening around that time I started exploring music production as well. I quickly fell in love with both sides of it and they’ve become a huge part of my life ever since.
HM: Amazing! Who would you say are your biggest musical inspirations, and how would you say they have influenced your sound?
Pixie: A lot of my inspiration comes from the people around me and the memories you make through music. Even just being out dancing, there might be a moment where I connect with a track or a feeling that sticks with me. I think those experiences definitely influence the music I make.
I also have a weekly radio show on George FM, and one of the listeners, Dave from the Tron, sends me tracks every week. Most of them are ’90s and early 2000s tracks that he used to love, and I’ve discovered so many songs through him that have really inspired me. I love the idea of bringing back some of that old-school rave feeling in my own music, and it’s definitely influenced a few of my tracks and what I play out.
I also get lots of inspiration from so many different artists! At the moment I’ve been listening to a lot BICEP, I love their analogue sound and how their music isn’t overly polished. It’s a nice reminder that those little imperfections are what gives a track its feeling and it reminds me not to overthink things when I’m producing.
HM: Your new track ‘TAKE ME TO THE RAVE’ is a huge tune! Can you tell us about how this one came together?
The inspiration behind ‘TAKE ME TO THE RAVE’ came from wanting to go out dancing with my friends. I love when you listen to music and you get into the mood to go out for the night! It’s got a bit of a 90s old school rave energy to it, with a bit of a new school twist. I also love the idea of people learning the vocal hook and singing it to each other!! I think those are the moments that turn a song into a memory.
HM: Absolutely! And one of your latest songs ‘LET ME IN’ is an absolute banger! Can you tell us about the process of creating this track?
Pixie: Aw, thank you! That’s so kind. ‘LET ME IN’ is definitely one of my favourite tracks to listen to on a beautiful sunny day. ‘LET ME IN’ came together in just one studio session. It started with a piano line that had this really happy feeling to it and the track is built around that. It all came together so quickly and I’m finding that sometimes those end up being your best songs. When an idea just flows and you don’t have to overthink it. It was actually winter when I wrote ‘LET ME IN’, so maybe I was just craving a bit of summer! I can’t wait to play it around festival season.
HM: We’re also obsessed with ‘YOUR EYES’ which has just hit 100K streams on Spotify! What were some of your favourite moments working on it?
I spent 12 weeks dedicated to making music in the studio and ‘YOUR EYES’ was actually the first track I made during that time.
One of my favourite things about making the track was that I could already imagine playing it in a Pixie Lane set and having people singing the lyrics back to me. I think there’s something really special about making a song and just knowing you’ve created a feeling that other people might connect with too.
I was going through quite a lot at the time, and making music was a way of putting a different feeling out into the world. Looking back, ‘YOUR EYES’ will always be special to me because it reminds me of the moment, I decided to go all in on being Pixie Lane.
HM: 2026 has been a huge year for you, from being the first person to ever play Bay Oval supporting FISHER and being the first and only Kiwi playing Ultra NZ mainstage! What have been some of your biggest career highlights so far?
Pixie: 2026 has honestly been wild. Supporting FISHER at Bay Oval and playing the Ultra New Zealand mainstage are definitely two of my biggest career highlights so far. Sometimes it’s still pretty crazy to look back on.
One moment that really stuck with me was being backstage at Ultra. They had an artist village set up exclusively for the mainstage artists, and my little green room was directly opposite Zedd’s, with DJ Snake right next to me.
I remember taking a moment to look around and think about the fact that I was there too. As a Kiwi artist and female producer, it was pretty special to be part of an event of that scale. It made me feel excited about where things could go from here.
HM: So incredible. Plus you’ve got performances coming up at Jim Beam Homegrown and Electric Avenue which is super exciting! What are you looking forward to most about those sets?
Pixie: It’s so exciting! It’s my first time I’ve played at both festivals. I’ve been putting out so much new music lately, so I’m really looking forward to playing those tracks in front of a festival crowd.
I think it would be pretty special to have people there who already know the songs and can sing them back. You spend so much time making music in the studio, so getting to see people connect with it in real life is something I’m really looking forward to. And both festivals have such incredible lineups, so it’s pretty cool to be part of them!!
HM: For sure! And who would you say is your dream DJ to open for?
Pixie: I’d love to open for Dom Dolla and Disclosure. I know you asked for one DJ, but I saw they did a b2b recently and it looked incredible! So if, I could open for both of them, that would be a dream. I think it’s such an iconic pairing!
And Dom Dolla, if you’re reading this, please bring Disclosure with you in March! (Just putting that out there, so we can manifest it)
HM: Yes, that would be so epic! As we’re a NZ music platform, who are some of your favourite artists, producers and DJs from Aotearoa right now, and are there any songs in particular that you especially love at the moment?
Pixie: One female producer I have to shout out is Emilie from Christchurch. I think she’s incredibly talented and she’s already making waves! Her track ‘CALL MY PHONE’ is a favourite of mine. It’s really inspiring to see another Kiwi female producer doing her thing, especially when there still aren’t that many women in music production.
For DJs, I have to mention my good friend Beccie B. Her sets always inspire me, and she’s someone who does so much to uplift other New Zealand artists. I love seeing people in our scene supporting each other and creating space for others to grow.
HM: Lastly, we always end with this question: if you could say one thing to every person in the world, what would it be?
Pixie: Show up as authentically as you can and don’t worry so much about what people think of you. Life’s too short to spend it trying to be someone you think other people want you to be.
Thanks so much Pixie! Make sure to keep up with her on Instagram, TikTok, Spotify & Apple Music.
