Raised in the small town of Tūrangi, Sons of Zion singer Jackson Owens is now making his debut as a solo artist with his latest single “Better With You” - an addictively smooth and sweet R&B-tinged track showcasing his effortless soulful vocal ability. Touring and performing with the likes of Six60, Sons of Zion & Stan Walker over the last 12 months, he tells us about his new record, upcoming music and more.

We’d love to know a little bit about your musical journey so far from when you first started singing and making music!

I started at the age of 9, grew up in a musical family, and started off doing covers online. I did a stint in America for a few years then came back to Aotearoa, and for the last few years I’ve gained back that love for music and have been working hard on my solo career.

Congrats on your amazing solo debut single “Better With You”! Can you tell us a little bit about the meaning behind the song?

As a whole, the song is mostly about commitment and about lost time in a relationship when you’re too scared to give your all to someone ... only to realise that that person was what made you complete & that you’re better with them. Like the lyrics say “ready to dive in”!

What were your main highlights creating this track and the stunning music video?

Working with a young up and coming producer Rory Noble has been a highlight in creating this project. The music video directed by Taine Noble, who was instrumental in bringing the visuals to life.

We’re also in love with Sons of Zion’s “Love On The Run” which was the first time you took on lead vocal duties with the band! What was your favourite part about working on this song?

My favourite part about working on this song would have to be working alongside Matt Sadgrove who is a talented songwriter/producer and band member of Sons of Zion. I am forever learning in this music industry, and it’s encouraging to work with creators like Matt to embrace as much knowledge as possible.

Do you have more new music on the way soon?  👀

Yes, I have been working over the last three years on my own EP which has slowly come into fruition and will drop just before summer of this year. Can’t wait to realise music that I am proud of and just genuinely loved creating.

Who are your biggest inspirations in music?

I grew up on old school RnB/soul music however more recently have been finding most of my musical inspiration comes from artists such as H.E.R, Lucky Daye, Giveon, Jazmin Sullivan and Allen Stone.

Who are some of your favourite NZ artists right now?

Sons of Zion, L.A.B, Six60, Stan Walker & Teeks.

What do you love most about living in New Zealand? Do you have any favourite places to travel to or local spots to visit?

I’ve travelled all around the world but nothing compares to home - it might be biased but my favourite place in Aotearoa is Tūrangi where I grew up.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learnt in your career so far?

The biggest thing that I’ve learnt in my music career is to enjoy the ride and do it because you love it.

Lastly, if you could say one thing to every person in the world, what would it be?

Do more of what makes you happy.

Thanks so much Jackson! Make sure to keep up with him on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify or Apple Music.
