Q&A: COTERIE

If you’re looking for music that’s like a groove-infused explosion of sunshine, make sure to check out the band COTERIE. The four Aotearoa-born, Perth-based brothers recently dropped their feel-good summer party anthem ‘Cool it down’ combining elements of reggae, indie-pop and surf rock and we’ve got it on repeat!

YOU GUYS ARE AN INCREDIBLY TALENTED FAMILY! WE'D LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY SO FAR FROM WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER!

Kia ora! Well, we’re four brothers of Ngai Te Rangi, Nga Puhi, Te Aupouri and we’ve been making music together for most of our lives. We live on the Coast of WA & this is where we officially started the band, COTERIE. Our journey looks like this - our parents were musicians for most of our lives, it’s all we know. So we’ve been jamming, writing and producing music together for most of our lives. Whānau gatherings, hanging with mates, it all looks like us jamming.

AMAZING! WE'RE LOVING YOUR LATEST TRACK ‘COOL IT DOWN" - IT'S THE PERFECT TRACK FOR THE SUMMER! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MEANING OF THIS TRACK AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?

“We caught it all, when we korero, now I’m longing for the sweet shores of Aotearoa..” - that sums it up, we’re Coasteez! As long as we have the waves of West Coast Drive in Perth or Tauranga Moana back home, we know we’re all good!

LOVE IT! WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN HIGHLIGHTS WORKING ON 'COOL IT DOWN'?

We recorded the whole waiata in our parents living room … what a vibe! Pre-prod everything was done from home, that whole process was beautiful!

DO YOU HAVE MORE NEW MUSIC ON THE WAY SOON?! IF SO, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

We have so many songs ready to go!! We’re frothing to get them out!! You can expect sun-drenched melodies & swirling guitars, the sweet smell of sea salt & windows down in your car - however that makes you feel, that’s what we’re making. We just wanna make you feel the water.

ONE OF THE FIRST TIMES WE FOUND YOUR MUSIC WAS YOUR VIRAL BOB MARLEY X SIX60 MASHUP ON TIKTOK WHICH WAS ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING! 🤯 DID YOU EVER EXPECT SUCH AN INSANELY  POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM THE VIDEO?

Honestly, that video was just a bit of fun that got outta hand haha we make these videos in between writing our own stuff. Social media’s a monster of its own, so we gotta try use it as best we can.

WHO WOULD YOU SAY ARE YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS IN MUSIC?

Uncle Bob haha nah, a bit of everything .. Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, SIX60.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE NZ ARTISTS RIGHT NOW AND ARE THERE ANY SONGS IN PARTICULAR THAT YOU ESPECIALLY LOVE OR CONNECT WITH?

SIX60 of course. L.A.B’s ‘Mr Reggae’ knocked us to Number 2 on release week haha. Mako Road is an absolute vibe though, especially ‘The Sun Comes Up’!!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT NEW ZEALAND? DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE PLACES TO TRAVEL TO OR LOCAL SPOTS THAT YOU LIKE TO VISIT?

Te Maunga down in Tauranga is one of our favourite places in the world. What do we love most? Hard to say really .. it’s our land, our sea, our people, our home. Whether it’s the kai moana or time with whānau, it’s everything.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR, AND WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER ARTISTS OUT THERE?

Have fun. It’s hard, so have fun. Go to the takutai, it helps with the fun.

LASTLY, IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Cool it down.

Thanks so much COTERIE! Make sure you keep up with them on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify or Apple Music.
